Woody Joe Duncan, age 80, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Saturday, June 2, 2012, at ParkWest Medical Center in Knoxville.

Woody Joe was born November 19, 1931 in Oliver Springs. He was a lifelong resident of this area.

Mr. Duncan served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. While serving he received several medals, citations, accommodations, and ribbons. Following his military discharge in 1951 he moved back to Oliver Springs and began employment as a deputy sheriff in Anderson County. He later became a state mine inspector for both TN and KY, and he served as the director/supervisor of Safety and Education for the Department of Mines and Minerals.

Mr. Duncan was a local businessman who owned and operated several area businesses, including D & M Construction, Duncan Trucking, Duncan Auto Sales and several area coal mines.

He was a member of the Alpha Masonic Lodge, 376 F & AM in Clinton, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Moose Lodge and Amvets all in Oak Ridge.

Woody Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred "Millie" Olllis Duncan, by his parents, Woody O. Duncan and Nola Braden Duncan, by sisters; Rebecca Duncan and Dixie Graves and by brothers; Wilson, Andrew, Kyle, Roy, Lee, James, Doyle, Ivan and Berlin Duncan.

Mr. Duncan is survived by daughters; Anita White and husband, Curtis of Clinton where Woody Joe had made his home for the past 4 years, Connie Neikirk and husband, Dwight of Kingston and Lynn Fowler and husband, Randy, of Oliver Springs, by grandchildren; Gary Joe Waldroup, Kelsey Fowler, Lyndsey Spangler, Renee White and Brandi Neikirk, and by great-grandchildren; Kelsey Blank and Kolton Spangler.

He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Johnny Duncan, by a special friend and caregiver, Marla Miniard, and other special friends, Don and Marilyn Curtis, R.C. Carroll and Hoyt Mullins, Jr.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 6, 2012, between the hours of 6:30 and 8:30 pm, at Sharp Funeral Home. The funeral will follow at 8:30 pm, in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Garvan Walls officiating. Burial with full military honors, will be held Thursday, June 7, 2012, at 12:00 noon, at Anderson Memorial Gardens. Sharp Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
