Robert Joe (Bob) Williams, age 82, of Oliver Springs, Tennessee, passed away in the early morning of August 6, 2021, at Methodist Medical Center.
Bob was born September 8, 1938, to J.C. Williams, Jr., and Frances Hill Williams. He was born in Fountain City, Tennessee; later, the family moved to a farm in Oliver Springs. He graduated from Oliver Springs High School in 1956, having served in leadership roles in the Future Farmers of America and other school clubs. He spent four years in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in locations as far removed as Turkey and Alaska. In 1959 Bob married Patricia Smith. They had two daughters, Maria and Jennifer.
After several decades of teaching, electronics, and construction, he went to work for the U.S. Postal Service as a rural carrier in Oliver Springs and, later, Clinton. He retired from the Postal Service in the 1990s and spent his retirement building various projects, traveling, gardening, and raising English Shepherds. Bob was an avid amateur astronomer who crafted his own telescopes and visited famous visited famous observatories. He was also an avid genealogist. Bob loved his home on Poplar Creek and enjoyed cane-pole fishing and boat building.
When asked once about his childhood, Bob stated that his parents were hard workers who made their living from farming. Growing up, he enjoyed his life on the farm: hunting, fishing, riding, and the outdoors. He loved playing sports and games with his cousins and neighbors.
He will be deeply missed.
Bob is survived by daughter Maria Williams and son-in-law David Williams; daughter Jennifer Marin and son-in-law Ray Marin; grandchildren Arcadia Williams, Andy Rowan and wife Cat Rowan, Emily Darbyshire, and Vivian Darbyshire; sisters Betty Cagley and Mary Williams; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by parents J.C. and Frances Williams, sister Linda White, and wife Patricia Williams.
Although no funeral service is scheduled at this time, a memorial service will be planned and announced for a later date. He will be interred beside his wife at Anderson County Memorial Gardens, Oak Ridge. Premier Sharp Funeral Home is honored to serve the Williams family.
